Art News + Plans

Art News + Plans

February 29, 2008 by Svetlana Send to a Friend Send to a Friend

Am going to change the format of this week’s column a little bit to include some exciting art and design news pertaining to our fair city. Standard issue run down of events this week below:

More is MORE.

News

+Yesterday Hirshhorn opened their extra terrific run down of Louise Bourgeois sculptures. This is the first time this is in America since 1995 and I’ve seen it at Tate Modern in 2000, and still remember every curve. The woman is a genius, if an unsettling one (all the best ones always are)
a must see
(while there, don’t miss out on the Cinema Effect part 1 as well)

+Then, and I can barely contain my excitement about this: just this Wednesday Adamson Gallery (aka DC’s premiere print exhibit space, for our money) announced that the Sartorialist Photo Exhibit is coming to town March 15th.
I spoke to Erin at the gallery and as of now, Scott is unable to attend the opening due to a sudden engagement in India but they are hoping he will be in town at a later date.
I can only look at his site every once in a while because it makes my surroundings seem decidedly less stylish and wonderful, but fingers crossed folks as dashing as this make it to the (tentative) opening:

and thirdly

and I have to thank gentle graffiti for this bit of infor:
+be ready to dress up your letters this summer.

“In recognition of their groundbreaking contributions to architecture, furniture design, manufacturing and photographic arts, designers Charles and Ray Eames will be honored this summer with a pane of 16 stamps designed by Derry Noyes of Washington, DC. If you’ve ever sat in a stackable molded chair, you’ve experienced their creativity. Perhaps best known for their furniture, the Eameses were husband and wife as well as design partners. Their extraordinary body of creative work — which reflected the nation’s youthful and inventive outlook after World War II — also included architecture, films and exhibits. Without abandoning tradition, Charles and Ray Eames used new materials and technology to create high-quality products that addressed everyday problems and made modern design available to the American public.”

now that you feel adequately enthused about all this,

arty parties for this week/end

Friday
as I mentioned in the Best Weekend Bets the Alliance Francaise is the place to be for their terrific art nights, tonight showing a series of watercolor paintings by Isabelle Babington.
Remember to RSVP.

Saturday
the Istvan Szabo film series closes at National Gallery of Art, and the Hungarian movie great is in town to introduce the highly stylized Mephisto. Free and amazing.

As far as openings go: Agnes Jacobs acrylics get their day at the Addison/Ripley Fine Arts (5 to 7pm for the exhibit), plus a very interesting show goes down at Shigeko Bork Mu Project on Wisconsin.

And if you are in the mood for something different (and auditory) check out Sound Scene II @ La Casa. Here is what the invite says:

The DC Listening Lounge invite you to an evening of sound so rich, your other senses will be jealous. This group of local producers and sound enthusiasts will explore the places and secrets of Washington, DC in sound through performances, an audio map of DC, and a confessional booth where visitors can tell their own secrets and stories. Performers include sound artists Sean Peoples, Layne Garrett, and others. Come, listen, and get involved!

And in the meantime, and for next week don’t forget to get unsettled by Michael Haneke.

Go feed your soul now.

Svetlana Says:

yes, we realized that this noon (someone should tell CULTURAL TOURISM DC to stop having it as their featured event too).

i am too lazy to edit it out/replace it with something else now, but use it as a MAJOR heads up. for now.
