Art Itinerary

May 29, 2008 by Svetlana Send to a Friend Send to a Friend

Ok, ok, I know I have not written this is a decade and a half BUT it has been a very busy time, and today Libby said she would write “Best weekend bets” and I said “THEN, I CAN WRITE ART ITINERARY”.
I CAN.

So, here is a handy weekend guide to things that will enrich your mind, fill your soul with beauty and magic AND possibly involve some free wine in the bargain as well.

Life, sometimes IT IS THAT GOOD.
(click on links for details)

THURSDAY
Leave work a little early (it is summer, almost, and you can totally persuade yourself you deserve it, and you know it), and pick one of the following activities:

+ 3 Women in Video Art Screening @ Smithsonian American Art Museum. 6 pm. Free. Featuring 1970s work by Nancy Holt, Dara Binbaum and Eleanor Antin.

+ Phillips collection is hosting its Millenium Arts Salon Talk series which comes free with gallery admission.

+ Library of Congress is screening some Warhol just for you at 7 pm (as always for nothing)

+ The Big Bear Cafe (just a hop and scotch away from Artomatic) is hosting a Multimedia night at 8

If you are feeling noble, the 3rd Annual “Through the Lens of D.C. Youth” Fundraiser takes place tonight @ ARTiculate Gallery tonight

FRIDAY

It is officially the weekend so it must be “party with art night”.

+ The Jazz series has fully kicked off in the Sculpture garden (every Friday for the rest of the summer) so take yourself there, and if you make it over early stop by and see some Rauschenberg at the National Gallery, paying respects to the great one who is no longer around.

additionally

+ Art Whino is hosting the opening of “We Don’t Sleep Well” featuring paintings by Mary Spring. 6 to midnight. DJs. food. frolic.

+ Hillyer is increasingly stepping up their event game (see here and here if you don’t believe me) and this Friday is no exception: The first HOME (Hillyer Open Mic Event) is HERE. 5 bucks if you’re not a member.

+ More Warhol movies at the Library of Congress. including the “Best of Warhol TV”

SATURDAY

Several movies are being shown that could be of interest, but also:

+ Philippa Hughes, the wonderwoman behind Pinkline projects (and special BYT friend) is hosting one of her “Art Collecting 101″ panels at Artomatic at 2 pm. You know you want to start. You just don’t know how.

+A cool group show at Katzen

+and at night during that “not the first and not the third weekend of the month” gallery opening wasteland, Randall Scott space opens doors to Sarah Wilmer’s beautifully unsettling pieces. Reception is at 7.

SUNDAY

No events scheduled per se, but go to Artomatic, check out the (newish) Ballyhoo exhibit at National Portrait Gallery, FINALLY make your way over to the Corcoran for
the American Evolution show
or do yourself a favor and stop by the National Building Museum for the first time ever. The Eero Saarinen show is on AND they let you picnic in the great hall.

From Transformer’s web site:

As a result of the premature closing of [Here & Now @ 1840 14th St.], Transformer will be hosting a party at Comet Ping Pong on Saturday, May 31 at 9:30 pm to share images of the artists’ installations, and programming that took place at 1840 14th Street, NW during the week that Here & Now was on view.

Please come join us to celebrate these artists and their work. Transformer Board Member Iona Rozeal Brown will be dj-ing along with special guests.

The party at Comet Ping Pong will follow the opening of site-specific work by Mariah Johnson (Los Angeles, CA) and Valerie Molnar (Richmond, VA) at Transformer Saturday May 31, 2008, 1-7pm. As part of the opening day, the artists will discuss their work at 3:30pm in conversation with Cynthia Connolly, Director of the Ellipse Art Center and Curator of The Thread as the Line.

I haven’t been there yet, but Project 4 has a new group show opening this Saturday as well; I think it runs until mid-July. I’m a big fan of Jeff Soto’s work, and saw the show mentioned on his blog on fecalface.com.

This post reads like a text message. Tell me you were home-schooled so I can rest assured in my prejudices.

Svetlana Says:

Just a quick heads up for future reference- Calling me home schooled is not going to do you any favors in terms of winning those Chuck Palahniuk tickets.

The post reads how it should read - a series of quick links leading to more information. Breezy and comprehensive.
