This week, Art planning post happens a day early because
a. there is a bundle of things happening on Thursday
b. there is a lot of weekend stuff going on which may require some pre-emptive planning on your part
and
c. I plan to go out tonight and that means I’ll be in no shape to digest any kind of route for you tomorrow morning.
so, hereeeeeee weeeeeeee gooooooo:
THURSDAY
There is a promising opening at Target Gallery in Alexandria BUT in my opinion the unmissable thing today is the The Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Adaptation screening at Hirshhorn. Three twelve-year-olds from Mississippi, Chris Strompolos, Eric Zala, and Jason Lamb, spent a considerable chunk of their adolescence developing this shot-for-shot remake that wrapped in 1989 but was shelved until 2003? Critic Sarah Hepola writes, “This is not cute, or ‘impressive considering their age,’ it is genuine virtuoso work.” Zala and Strompolos will introduce this notorious, rarely screened homage.
FRIDAY is pretty chill, some free movies aside
but
SATURDAY brings the motherload:
Start of early at Studio Gallery for Deborah Riley’s dance preview and reception and the take a corner and turn to:
The 1515 14th street art complex is ALWAYS the place to see art and be seen and this opening weekend is no different: we have Airfield @ Curator’s Office, a doubling up of works of Franz Jantzen and Martin Kotler at Hemphill and Dan Steinhilber at G Fine Art all of which seem very promising, but the show with the most buzz is hands and toes down the Adamson Gallery opening of Sartorialist.
I myself am excited on an almost pathetic level, both for what is in the photos and for David Adamson’s sure-to-be-masterful-treatment of prints
(Scott Schuman himself won’t be at the opening since he is in India on assignement, but there will be an additional party on Wednesday for him)

If all this seems like too much of a hullabaloo, just up the street at Palace 5ive there is a party and a screening for The Underskatement Project. Expect short movies about skating, free drinks, djs and some seriously cool kids.
And lastly but not leastly Art whino is back with its premiere edition of Indulge: an evening of Art, Wine and Performance.
In addition to all that, don’t forget to:
-Indulge in audio/sonic joy that is the Qatsi trilogy at AFI
-Check out the new Ornament as Art exhibit at the Renwick (which opens Friday)
-stop by the Corcoran for their American Evolution through Art show
-check out the SWEET exhibit
-and make something close to Faberge eggs for yourself and your loved ones
and a few other things I forgot, probably.
