Art Itinerary

February 8, 2008 by Svetlana Send to a Friend Send to a Friend

First things first: REMINDERS.

-Warming up to a Museum is still on ALL MONTH. 99% of events are free, so you really have no excuse.

- JAPAN! celebration is in full swing at the Kennedy Center: robots, harajuku girls, exhibits, movies, you name it, they’ve got it.

-The SWEET Exhibit is going on at UMD. Looks too cool for words. So, thank God we have photos

-Recognize! Hip Hop Portraiture Show is Opening at National Portrait Gallery. The reception is tonight, but you probably cannot get in, however that should not stop you for being all over it this weekend as everyone worth their tagging salt will be talking about it for weeks to come.

and now, for the handy weekly art party/talk/workshop guide:

FRIDAY
Both Touchstone Gallery and Meat Market Gallery are having exhibit opening receptions tonight (click on links for detailssss). Party hop time.

Also, at the Goethe Institut, DC Film Shorts festival is having its best of screenings (at 7 and at 9 with a repeat tomorrow)

SATURDAY
Bright and early at 10.30 amPANCAKE MOUNTAIN is hosting a multi-media dance party at Avalon, featuring video artist Mike Relm of The Blue Man Group. Bring a child. Bring yourself.

while you’re awake:

The Botanic Gardens just opened their Alphabet of Orchids Exhibit. So beautiful, your heart may risk breaking. They’re having a special 1 pm tour today.

and if you don’t want to stop the Istvan Sabo Film Series kicks off at National Gallery of Art with 2 movies: his early short Koncert, followed by The Age of Daydreaming at 4pm

Then at night:
stop by Studio Gallery and Long View Gallery both of which are hosting receptions for their new exhibits (as always clicking will get you details)

SUNDAY
The big eye candies of the day come from Asia in the form of The Chinese New Years Parade (from 2 to 5 in that sad excuse of ours for a Chinatown) and the Harajuku evening at Millenium Stage

Plus, art movis a-go-go.

MONDAY
a song, dance, lecture night dedicated to the miracle that was Sarah Vaughan at National Portrait Gallery. 7 pm, and free but with limited seating so come early.

TUESDAY
A creative happy hour Salon Contra at Marvin. Drink, listen to Yoko, talk, hatch plans.

WEDNESDAY
So, its the day before Valentine’s day and naturally all gallery talks today revolve around love and art.

If the very thought of this makes you want to vom a teeny bit in your mouth, two terrific and stylish alternatives are:
- the “Modernism in Film” screening of The Best of Everything at the National Building Museum (pack a picnic, watch Joan Crawford chew some scenery)

and
- the unstoppably cool Deborah Nadoolman (who designed costumes for Indiana Jones and Three Amigos, as well as Michael Jackson’s red “Thriller” Jacket) stops by Corcoran for a 7pm lecture

THURSDAY
two words: chocolate workshop
