Brightest Young Things

I hope everyone is ready to look at some great shows this weekend because while DC Art is still playing some catch up with the snow delayed openings, a brand spanking new batch of food for your eyes and soul is here.

As always, before we get into weekend's events, a couple of notes AND links:

  • Intersections Arts Festival kicks off this weekend. Movies, workshops, talks-go here: http://intersectionsdc.org/ for more details
  • The Rubell Family is (EVER) expanding their art presence in DC and have just purchased the former Randall School at 65 I Street NW (across the street from their Capitol Skyline Hotel) for $6.5 million from the Corcoran Gallery of Art and College of Art + Design and are planning to turn it into a contemporary art museum

OK-ONTO THINGS TO DO AND SEE THIS WEEKEND:

FRIDAY

hockey

  • Over at Flashpoint, you can see the results of a two summer long photography project by Jennifer Dorsey of the interiors of two area high schools. Opening reception for ALMA MATER is tonight at 6pm
  • PECHA KUCHA is coming together with Architecture for Humanity to lend a hand in rebuilding Haiti. Tonight's 20 artists, 20 slides presentation is at the Embassy of Austria and if my experience has thaught me anything than it has thaught me that these events are insanely popular, so make sure you purchase your tickets and RSVP in advance if you want to go.

SATURDAY

Let me preface this by saying-you'll probably be spoilt for choice

  • Over on 14th street Adamson gallery opens WOMEN, its first show in a while, and, as expected-it is a stunner: large scale prints of the photos Titouan Lamazou took while he traveled the world documenting over 200 women. Reception is at 6:30

  • And right next door on the same floor, the very tiny Curator's Office hosts the very larger than life opening of DRAG, a series of very expressive close-ups of Drag Queens by Jason Horowitz. Reception is at 6pm.

Shi-Queeta Lee (B-08-002)

  • Just up the street Hamiltonian follows up its massively succesful Call+Response show with an exploration of interpretation of repetition, pop culture and customs by Alex Kondner, Ian MacLean Davis, Linda Hesh and Bryan Rojsuontikul. Opening reception is at 7.
  • Art Whino hosts a double reception: one for the snow-delayed Cutthroat and one for Nick Morris' chaotic pop art which is opening this weekend. Be there at 6.
  • Also, after 2 reschedulings Activation 2719 happens this Saturday. You have to RSVP so do it. ReadySetDC which is helping throw the event has been doing interviews with the artists involved all week, so read those as well.

BOTH SATURDAY AND SUNDAY

  • Kevin Reese presents A Perfect Balance, a one-man play inspired by Alexander Calder's mobiles. The National Gallery of Art is hosting the event and there are 2 performances: one Saturday at 11 a.m. and one on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.

the picture from the Adamson gallery WOMEN opening looks like a suite at the Standard in downtown LA

pretty sure since it has the foot sculpture in the bathroom, open wall jacuzzi and mod furniture
