Rumor has it is going to snow balls this weekend (again) so please check with the galleries whether receptions are still going to be going on. Having said that, for all those of you desperate for a Superbowl respite here is what to do this weekend, for you, your soul and your future cocktail party conversation skills.
First, a couple of note:
- Phillips is opening their Georgia O’Keefe show this weekend. Francis will be writing a preview for this for you shortly, so stay tuned.
- GWU’s Luther W. Bradley Gallery is opening a show of Warhol Polaroids from their permanent collection. And while there is no reception, per se, it promises to be wonderful and nostalgic and …..

- Starting in March BYT will be partnering up with Pinkline to host Salons as part of our Year in Art initiative. In the meantime, get acquainted with the concept by attending one of the Salon Contras in February
- DCist has a great round-up of DC Museum Shows in February, make sure you check it out, since a lot of this stuff is not covered in the Art Itinerary
- We got this amazing/hilarious video from the Soundry, explaining what the hell is their place. They’re hosting an open call for their upcoming “FUCK the machine” show, if you’re interested
OK-now onto the event recommendations for this weekend. Ready? (make sure to click on links for more details)
THURSDAY
- Phillips After 5 turns all romantical with “Art and Romance” with Music by Adrian Loving, chocolate tastings, their romance video booth and more. Those that scoff at the mush can find refuge in the screenings of the Chezch avant-garde movies which are also part of the program.
- For something a little more low key but absolutely fascinating, stop by the Mexican Cultural Institute where in conjunction with their Ruffino Tamayo and Mixografia years, they’re hosting a talk with Luis and Lea Remba, founders of the Mixografia workshops

FRIDAY
- Matt Sesow and Dana Ellyn’s “Till Death do us Part” is BYT Year in Art’s 2nd spotlight show and it opens tonight with a reception AND A WEDDING @ Long View Gallery. Check out ther story and more here.

- It is First Fridays in Dupont so check out Dupont Circle Arts blog (done in collaboration with the WPA) about the openings but make sure you check out Structured Turbulence at Hillyer
- Washington Printmakers have made their move to Pyramid Atlantic Center and tonight, they celebrate with their 25th anniversary show
SATURDAY
- For everyone obsessed with reality TV, Gallery Plan B is hosting probably the most fascinating 2 day show of the year thus far: “AS SEEN ON TV” features art “from a reality show recently filmed in DC”. You know you’re too curious to not go.
- The Fridge is hosting the opening reception for “Empty Time” which celebrates the loveliness of banality. Local artist and man about town Trevor Young curates and “pairs painting and photography from artists across America who express the immediacy of memories of vanished time”
- And the young bucks over at ReadySetDC help put together Activation 2719, a group show (including DECOY, and Tim Conlon’s work) at (you guessed it) 2719 13th street. RSVP is required for the opening reception.
Some other, already opened shows to check out:
- Edmond Van Der Bijl’s HEXAGON @ 3307 M Street
- “From Turner to Cezanne” @ The Corcoran
