Brightest Young Things

As of this week, in the light of our "Year in Art 2010" announcement and effort we will, in addition to events also start running down some interesting art stories published by other online operations in DC . Get ready to be really informed.

But first things first (click on the links for more details). Things to do, art to see:

THURSDAY

  • Icarus Rising is again sold out @ The Phillips Collection, but the good news is that they will continue their collaborative nights in February so, the second the invite shows up-RSVP.

  • Art Club at DEKKA happens every 3rd Thursday (part of Mid-City's 3rd Thursday effort) and anyone and all are invited to come and create whatever they want. 6-9pm.
  • As part of their Information Exchange program, the WPA holds a talk with Italian visual arts curator Chiara Sartori tonight 6 to 7 p.m. Free but you should RSVP to kbilonick@wpadc.org.

FRIDAY

  • Katie Schuler provides the art, and Matt Hemerlein provides the music for the very special night of Creatura @ SOVA. Bring a flashlight. Don't ask why, just do.
  • For those looking to feel good about their art patronage Honfleur and their Vivid Solutions counterpart are holding concurrent exhibits "Stories" and "Migrations" tonight which features work by three photographers who've traveled to various African countries to document current issues there; proceeds from the exhibit go to the International Lifeline Fund. And yes, this is in Anacostia, but Anacostia is really not that hard to get to.

SATURDAY
Is a big night.

  • YiA 2010's first spotlight exhibit "Call and Response" (check back for our feature tomorrow on it) opens @ Hamiltonian Gallery. 16 Writers were paired with 16 Artists and the results of it all will be there for everyone to see for the very first time ever (including the writers who provided the inspiration for the art work), which should to be interesting to say the least. Free beer provided by Flying dog ale, as part of their "Support Local Creativity" effort.

  • At the same time a couple of blocks away Hemphill Gallery is hosting an opening for 3 of their permanent artists. On show are nostalgia tinged vintage Kodak Brownie images by William Christenberry, installation and collage pieces by Robin Rose, and prints and paintings by Donald Baechler in his Flower Studies.
