The second weekend of the month is always a big one for the DC art world and September is no exception.
There is SO MUCH going on that attempting to be everywhere may result in feeling a little bit like a headless chicken, so while I have meticulosly listed everything I heard of in the calendar here is where I think you would get the most satisfying experience combining stimulation for both your visual and other senses.
Click on links for more details and I’ve attached flyers where possible.
- First and foremost though:
The Avedon “Portraits of Power” Exhibit Opens at the Corcoran This Weekend. File Under “UNMISSABLE”. All caps. - Also in action: The Kennedy Center Open Arts House and The Live Simulcast of Traviata on Saturday. Missing things makes you seem unmotivated. Just so you know
- The local opening fun starts tonight. Leading the way we have Transformer’s two part “ID-entity” show opening, Featuring work by ten emerging Mexico City based artists, which hosts a reception at the gallery on Friday, an artist talk AND another reception at the Mexican Cultural Center on Saturday

- Also, the Dissident Display men are hosting a group show “futurism and the African art legacy,” opening called Space Invaders, party on Friday from 7 to 11, artist meet and greet on Saturday 4:30 to 6:30pm
- plus, interesting shows at Zone Zero and Addison Ripley
come Saturday
though I hope you all are well rested because it is a JUNGLE AHEAD.
2 Unmissables in my book
- Julia Fullerton-Batten’s solo show, in between, opens at Randall Scott gallery, and from what I have seen, it is going to be one of the most talked about photo exhibits this early fall season: all the staging of Sandy Skoglund and then a little more awkwardness and ambiguity on top

- And Adamson Gallery leads the way to another awesome night at 1515 14th street with their Atelier Adamson show opening featuring prints from Jenny Holzer, Chuck Close Robert Rauschenberg and others.

In the same building, join the best gallery hop in town and check out Hemphill, Curator’s office and G Fine Art all of which are opening shows on Saturday too (click on links for details)

- Up the street Irvine contemporary is opening a show of Teo Gonzalez’ new, minimalist paintings
and if all this sounds WAAAAAY too predictable and non-urbane (ahem) head over to:
- DC Freshly Squeezed show @ Blagden Alley, where for 20 bucks from 8 and onwards you can (open bar) party AND mingle with a dozen or so emerging DC artists

PLUS
- a farewell to consumerism hosted by Meat Market gallery. In their parking lot. I sense things may be getting burned.

Additional ideas are available in the calendar but all suggestions, as always, welcome.
